Room to Read Review 2026: Is It a Good Education Charity?

Room to Read focuses on two specific outcomes — literacy for young children and secondary school completion for girls — in a set of countries across Asia and Africa. This focused mandate is its greatest strength and the right starting point for evaluating it as a giving destination.
What Room to Read does
Room to Read runs two core programs. The Literacy Program works with government primary schools to improve early grade reading instruction through teacher training, classroom libraries, and locally produced children's books. The Girls Education Program provides multi-year support — mentoring, life skills training, family engagement, and conditional financial support — to help girls stay in school through secondary education.
Both programs work through government systems rather than parallel structures, which is a meaningful philosophical choice. Building government capacity means that improvements can outlast Room to Read's direct involvement, though it also means program quality is partially dependent on government partner commitment.
The evidence base
Room to Read publishes learning assessment data showing reading skill improvements among students in literacy program areas. For the Girls Education Program, it tracks school completion rates and publishes longitudinal data on girls who completed the program.
This outcome data is above average for education nonprofits. Most organizations track enrollment or attendance as proxies for impact. Room to Read tracks whether girls actually finish school and whether children actually develop reading skills, which is closer to what donors care about.
External evaluations have found positive effects of Room to Read programs, though the evidence base is not as strong as Pratham's randomized controlled trial results. The difference is methodological — Pratham has been more extensively studied by independent researchers — rather than a finding that Room to Read is less effective.
The financial picture
Charity Navigator gives it four stars. The organization publishes detailed annual reports including program statistics by country and financial breakdowns.
US donors can give through Room to Read's main organization. International donors including those in India can give through Room to Read's regional fundraising offices or the main website.
What makes Room to Read stand out
The locally produced children's books program is a practical and often overlooked contribution. In many countries where Room to Read works, there is a shortage of books written in local languages at appropriate reading levels for young children. Room to Read has published millions of books in dozens of languages that would not otherwise exist. This creates lasting resources independent of ongoing program delivery.
The verdict
Room to Read is a legitimate, financially transparent, and program-focused organization with above-average transparency about learning outcomes. For donors who want to support education with verifiable results and a specific focus on girls and early literacy, it is one of the stronger options in the sector.
